Any tips on how/where to hang bird suets in my back garden for best results?
I used to live in southern California, but I now live in Wisconsin. We have very cold winter temperatures here, so I've been trying to turn my back garden into a sort of mini-refuge for local birds. I have an electric heated birdbath that keeps the water from freezing, and that has attracted a LOT of birds. Last weekend, I went to the local garden center and bought a case of birdseed suets (made from beef lard, sunflower and other seeds). It's labeled as a year-round, "high energy" mix that attracts a variety of birds. Right now, I have two suets hanging in trees in the garden, but so far, nobody's eating! Any tips on how and where to place them for best results?
I have suet and seed feeders hanging on the posts of my covered deck on the back of the house (so I can sit in the kitchen and great room and watch them). It takes a week or two for the birds to find what they are looking for so you might just want to be patient. Woodpeckers are the only ones who eat the suet here, and the rest of the birds feed at the seed feeders here. We do not have any squirrels to worry about here. All the birds have to worry about is a sharp shinned hawk that cruises through every now and then (they eat birds). You might want to try a Seed Feeder too with a general seed mix or oiled seeds are loved by many birds too, but more expensive. All the varieties here will eat the normal mix. I don't think it really matters where you place a feeder, just give them some time to find it. I live in a cold climate too.
