traveling with two cats to Germany from Usa?
i want to take my two cats (both about a year old) with me to germany. i have read a lot about all the shots etc that i need to get done.I want to find out if having their RABIES TITER shots done will help to NOT have them in quarentine. my vet said these shots are about $ 110 per cat and will take 4 months to get the results back.
OK- I spent about $400 total to get my cat from the US to Germany-I got his vaccinations up to date including the rabies titer, and even had these certified at the USDA to make sure the German gov´t would approve his entrance. I also had my vet put in an international chip (AVID brand) because if he´s lost in Germany, they can track him-something the gov´t requires in case you haven´t heard this. Then I did pay the airlines to take my cat on the plane-do not put them in cargo if you can avoid it, and I got a soft carrier-it looked like a briefcase instead of a cat carrier, and took him in the plane.
You know what happened at the so called German customs? No one noticed that I had a cat!!! I walked right past 5 officals, and no one stopped me. I was so mad because I had spent all that money for no one to check my cat and the papers that I had paid so much money for-anyway, yes, get the rabies titer and save yourself time and money. If they would have checked my cat, and found he didn´t have the shots and this chip put in him, my cat would have been stuck in Munich for months-at my expense!!!
Oh, by the way, if you are thinking about getting them declawed-I know some are against this, but I think it´s a Godsend-do it in the States. Many German vets will not do this procedure.
By the way, I did take my cat in the plane, and when landing, we were told to put him down under the seat. Good thing I checked on him-he was panting because of the heat in Atlanta!!! When we landed in Munich, my husband put a newspaper over the carrier on my lap and the flight attendant never knew he was not put under my seat-poor kitty!!!
