Cedar Bird
I have Love Birds I got them a nesting box. They peek inside of it but still have not went in.?
What is supposed to be in the bottom of the box.?I have cedar chips. And can you ever tell male from females?
Cedar chips are toxic, get rid of them immediately.
Something soft needs to be in the box. A mix of carefresh bedding, aspen bedding, and something the birds can shred to make their own nest material as well is ideal. (newspaper, willow branches, etc)
You can't tell the difference between male and female lovebirds unless they are the Abyssinian or Madagascan species, but those are not common in the pet trade. You need to have a bird lay and egg, be surgically sexed, or DNA tested to know 100% what the sex is.
Colors don't matter, both can be bright or dull. Color of the feet, eyes, or beak is no indication either in lovebirds. Behaviors can also be misleading as typical gender behaviors can often be displayed by either gender (shredding and tucking paper for instance).
A DNA test is cheap ($20-25), and is easy to do yourself. Clip a nail a little short for a few drops of blood on a test card, or simply pluck a few chest feathers and send them in. You get results in just a few days.
