Mouse Cage
We keep our mouse cage very clean, but its still stinky! Any tips on how to control the odor, its soo smelly!?
Please help up think of good ways to keep the cage, and the room the cage is in smelling good. They said it was a female mouse, which is supposed to be less stinky than the male, but the cage and room gets so stinky just the DAY after I Clean the cage. HELP, we love our pet, but she is just sooo stinky!
Some other people here have recommended you use cedar bedding - but that's actually quite dangerous for mice, or most other Small Animals. The strong odor of cedar damages the respiratory system of mice. Cat litter too is dangerous - the mice nibble anything and it can be toxic to them. If you do decide to change the bedding use a brand called Carefesh - pet mouse experts seem to agree that's one of the best beddings you can use.
Still, like some others have said here, mice tend to be a bit smelly, even when clean. How long have you had your mouse? I had a female mouse too, and when I first brought her home and for the first few months I had her she was pretty smelly, despite having her cage and wheel cleaned frequently. Then gradually she stopped being smelly and finally she didn't smell at all. Maybe this was because she had gotten older and didn't "advertise" her presence as much anymore to any potential male mice.
Maybe you could try wiping off her wheel each morning after her night-time marathon....I've found this helps cut down on odor.
Whatever you do though please don't use any chemicals or deodorants - mice are very sensitive to things like that because they taste and nibble everything in their environment.
Good luck with your little friend - she can't help being stinky and it's good you love her despite that.
