How could you tame an aggressive snake?
I have a king snake and he is very aggressive and always strikes at me. I try and work with him with a snake hook and gloves. I can't figure out how to work with him.. It's soooo hard! This is my second day too, so I really don't have any experience and I need someone to help me out with this. If anyone can help me with taming my snake/making it able to handle again, please comment I REALLY need some help.
Snakes have two types of biting behavior; feeding response, and defense. These sound like defensive bites.
Although you didn't specify, I will assume this is a young, captive bred specimen. Young snakes tend to be nippier than older individuals.
In general, as snakes are handled more frequently, they tend to become more tolerant of it, and stop biting. Some individuals will never tame, but most do.
Here is some more specific advice:
- Stop using the gloves and hook. They will not help tame the snake. If you want the snake to become accustomed to your bare hands, use your bare hands. Yes, you will get nailed a few times. EVERY snake keeper with any level of experience has been bitten. You will get used to it.
-Most beginners do not approach/pick up/handle the snake properly, due largely because they are nervous about being bitten. Beginners tend to slowly, cautiously move their hand in front of the snake, in an attempt to reassure it. This method actually INVITES the snake to bite!
Instead, when you pick up the snake, move your hand QUICKLY, and grab the snake. Pick it up BEFORE it has time to react. My guess is that the snake is biting as you pick it up, but not once you are holding it. Do not restrain the snake or grab it by the neck or tail- hold it gently, and let IT hold on to YOU. Don't drop it though.
-Heat increases a snakes metabolism, and makes them more active. Therefore, you might also try removing the snakes heat source before you handle it, and give it a chance too cool down. They are less aggressive when they are at a cooler temperature. Remember to turn the heat back on, though, as they need it to digest their food.
Handle the snake frequently, handle it gently, and accept that it may bite you from time to time, and it most likely will calm down eventually.
