Two Sheppard
England Sheppard Family?
OK, for starters, I want to say that most of the info I'm going to give is just what my mother says my grandmother said.
I am looking for anyone with information about this family or know anyway for me to find out any info about this family. My Great-great grandfather's name was John Sheppard. On this NY census it says that his father was from England and mother was Irish I believe. Now from what my mother told me, he was thrown out of the country for thievery... supposedly again the Royal family of the time (I suppose about early to mid 1800s). As the story was told to me, two brothers actually came over to the US through Canada, one who had supposedly committed the crime and one who hadn't. Well, my G-G Grandfather was born in NY (meaning that's where there's a dead end) and married a Myrtle who was also born in NY. That's really all the info I have that really matters. Any ideas? Could this even possibly be true?
My first thought is that if he were stealing from the Royal family, he would go to jail (but I don't know what the English laws were at that time!)
To discover the ancestry of your g-g-grandfather, you would need to research his records: death certificate, will, property records, marriage license, immigration and naturalization records, military records, if applicable, etc. etc. (Personally, I've had great success with marriage licenses -- often the parents are listed on those.)
Your goal is to find his parents' names and his place of birth. Once you have those, you can search English records (some of these may be free online.)
Have you traced him in every US Census that is applicable? Have you checked to see if there were any other Sheppards in the town or county? They MAY be relatives -- you would have to confirm that with additional data.
If you can, consider purchasing a subscription to ancestry.com. They have an incredible amount of data. If you don't want to do that, contact your local library to see what databases they have. Also contact libraries in the area that you don't normally go to.
